There is, has been and probably always will be some sort of animosity towards SEO in certain parts of the blogosphere, this post isn’t really about that debate but you can read about it here.
SEO is the lifeblood of just about all online businesses so getting it right pays. The long tail in seo has been coming to the forefront recently. Basically it means going for lots of lower value keywords that tie into specific user needs/searches instead of targetting high value keywords.
Seth Godin has just released a free ebook that is pretty much on this subject and about embracing the system.
So, Kingsway Mansions. We launched Locationate just two weeks ago, at present it just has some test data that we are using while we add properties for the launch early next year.
The domain has just been registered, it has no pagerank, but by using long tail keywords we are already hitting the top spot in SERPS. We did some research, I know not something often done, about what people search for and built our content and SEO around this, targeting long tail keywords, no competition, no PPC to compete against, just putting what people are searching for right in front of them.
The result

After just a week online we are seeing hits from SERP’s. The thing is maybe only one or two people search for this each month, but when they do we supply them with something pretty damn close to what they want, now multiply this by a few thousand long tail keywords and hey presto you’re beating the big guys.
Even better let them add to and build the content. This isn’t rocket science, it’s taking what bloggers have shown to work and applying it to your business strategy.
The alternative would be to go for the high value, PPC’d to death keywords such as property for sale.
Seth of course says all of this much more succinctly,

Not sure what keyword you were targeting here though as kingsway mansions not in title tag or URL? I thought they were the most important onpage elements?
Normally you would, normally an unranked page wouldn’t get above one with PR2 (as in this case), but we have taken a whole new approach to SEO, it’s not blackhat but it is different to what you would normally do, firstly because of the keyword targeting and secondly to counteract using so much ajax on the site, which means many of the normal on page elements aren’t visible to search engine crawlers.
I will write it all up but it’s to early to do that yet, we’ve still got a whole lot of testing to do.
