Evan Williams (Twitter co-founder among other things) has made a very insightful post on evaluating your idea.

Evan poses 7 questions

  1. Tractability
Question: How difficult will it be to launch a worthwhile version 1.0?
  2. Obviousness
Question: Is it clear why people should use it?
  3. Deepness
Question: How much value can you ultimately deliver?
  4. Wideness
Question: How many people may ultimately use it?
  5. Discoverability
Question: How will people learn about your product?
  6. Monetizability
Question: How hard will it be to extract the money?
  7. Personally Compelling
Question: Do you really want it to exist in the world?

A very well thought through article and well worth a read.

Of course there is no real way of evaluating success of a business that actually works, if there was there would be no failures.
